Race 2 Rundown

Race 2 - The Chinese Grand Prix.  It was an exciting race, to say the least, and as there was no race last week, writing this filled the void for me.  Also seeing as the Japanese Grand Prix Race Week starts tomorrow, I thought it was time to get this race rundown done. One thing is for sure, I have no idea where to start, but when in doubt it is probably best to start at the beginning.  During race one, I started taking notes during the race of my thoughts. I am going to try to do that during every race but here is my summary of my notes and thoughts from the second race.

Important & Iconic Moments:

First of all, this was the first sprint week of the season!  Hamilton ended in first, Piastri got second and Verstappen got third.  The Chinese Grand Prix week was a range of emotions for me and while I hoped for my favorite driver (Lando) to win, I think these results are amazing.  These drivers drove an amazing sprint race.

Oscar Piastri: I need to talk about this driver.  While he is not my number one driver he is definitely one of my favorites.  He started from pole in the race, his FIRST EVER pole of Formula 1, and a little spoiler, HE WON.

The beginning of the race was a mix of excitement and chaos.  Lando started in third and moved to second.  Charles lost part of his front wing?  Alonso’s brakes went out, were possibly on fire?  He had no brakes.  He unfortunately had to retire in lap 4.  Gabriel Bortoleto went into the gravel but recovered.

At one point after Lando Norris pitted he had to make up quite a few places.  Overtake KING.  This race was like a masterclass in overtaking from quite a few drivers.  Including overtake sass, courtesy of Ollie Bearman on the radio, “Ciao”.  This comment came a few times after Ollie overtook a few other drivers.

At one point in the race Jack Doohan locked up and forced Isack Hadjar off the track.  Doohan actually received a few penalty points from this.  My initial reaction to this was feeling bad for both rookies but especially for Isack after the rough first race he had (or never got to have).

In the last few laps of the race Lando started to have some difficulty with his brakes.  His brakes were going out and he still managed to keep his position and secure a podium place.

The theme of the race, you ask?  A functioning car? Never heard of it.  Working brakes, intact front wings?  They weren’t needed.

The last important moment of the race was the driver of the day.  Kimi Antonelli, got his first DOTD!

DNFs/DSQs:

The only DNF was Fernando Alonso, but after the race, there were three disqualifications.  Pierre Gasly, Charles Leclerc, and Lewis Hamilton.  The Ferrari team were struck down hard after the race with both of their drivers being disqualified.  Pierre Gasly (Alpine) and Charles Leclerc were both disqualified for their cars being underweight.  Lewis Hamilton was disqualified because of overwear of his rear skid block.

Podium:

The podium ended up as Oscar Piastri P1, Lando Norris P2, and George Russell P3.  This was a great podium and we love to see a Mclaren 1-2!

Other News:

There was some breaking news last week.  Yuki Tsunoda is getting a chance to get his wings with Redbull Racing and Liam Lawson is returning to RB.  This is causing quite the uproar in the community.  Some people think that Liam should have been given more of a chance - more than two races that is - some people are excited for Yuki, and some people are very convinced that the second Redbull seat is, in fact, cursed.  I believe all of the above and have conflicting feelings about it all.  While I am excited for Yuki - getting to drive for Redbull at his home race- I can't help but feel so bad for Liam.

The Japanese Grand Prix should be exciting and I can not wait to see how it goes!
